Listening to a scanner can feel like learning a new language. In the Louisville Metro area, IDs and call numbers follow a specific structure. Use this guide to identify which agency is on the air.

Louisville Metro Fire (LMFD)

Metro Fire units are identified by their specific apparatus type and station number. Engines carry water and hoses, Trucks or Quints handle ladders and ventilation, and Battalion Chiefs (e.g., Battalion 2) oversee geographic sectors of the city.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD)

LMPD units are organized by Division. A unit starting with '1' (e.g., 121) belongs to the 1st Division. Dispatchers often refer to beats or sectors. You will also hear specialized units like Air Justice (the helicopter) or Viper units during high-intensity operations.

Suburban & Shively Agencies

Jefferson County suburban fire districts (like St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, or Highview) use 800-series or district-specific IDs. Shively and other small municipalities often maintain their own patrol IDs but interact frequently on the MetroSafe main dispatch talkgroups for mutual aid.

Pro-Tip: When listening to MetroSafe, the 'Unit ID' on your digital display often provides the specific radio hardware number, while the verbal callsign is the operational identifier assigned for that shift.

Types of Radio Systems for Scanning

Analog Systems

The traditional standard for radio traffic. Analog signals are transmitted as continuous waves. While older, many local agencies and aircraft still use analog for its simplicity and 'fail-soft' nature (getting staticy instead of cutting out completely).

Digital Systems (P25)

APCO-P25 is the modern standard for public safety. Digital systems convert voice into data packets, providing crystal-clear audio and allowing for encryption, GPS data, and better frequency efficiency.

Understanding Trunked Systems

Trunking allows many groups of users to share a small set of frequencies. Instead of one channel per group, a computer assigns an available frequency 'on the fly.' This is how large networks like Indiana's SAFE-T manage thousands of daily transmissions.
